Experts are tipping that Tianjin's Nankai district is going from strength to strength, tapping its innovative resources, to get itself into shape as a high-tech platform.
The district already has a lot going for itself as home to the renowned Nankai University and Tianjin University, as well as 37 research institutes.
"We've made great achievements in the field of smart technologies, buoyed by a group of leading tech firms and research institutes," according to a senior local official.
In 2018, Nankai's regional GDP was 89.3 billion yuan ($12.55 billion), the general public budget income was 4.317 billion yuan and the per capita disposable income of its residents was 48,788 yuan.
Officials said that strategic cooperation agreements have been forged with the leading universities, leading to a number of research complexes taking shape around campuses.
Buoyed by supportive government policies, Nankai has attracted a wide range of companies to expand into the booming smart technologies market. The district itself has attracted 217 national SMEs and 238 state-level high-tech enterprises.
The district also made a big push to transform and upgrade traditional industries.
Last year, 449 enterprises with registered capital of more than 10 million yuan each located in the district , while total investment reached 10.03 billion yuan.
Services industry reached 93.8 percent, contributing 89.6 percent tax revenue of the city. The high-quality development index ranks first in the city.
Now, Tianjin is shaping up to become a high-tech hub, having rolled out a series of supportive policies to develop the blossoming artificial intelligence sector as it aims to inject new impetus into the city's economic growth.
To further aid economic growth, a massive reform of government administration and services is taking place in the district, officials said.
The district is also reducing red tape for local companies.
Approval procedures have been streamlined in order for lower-level authorities to facilitate business development in the area.
