Fu Zuoyi was a military leader of the Nationalist Party of China and became famous in the anti-Japanese War. He was responsible for defending Beijing during the Chinese Civil War. After the Communist Party of China (CPC) military liberated Tianjin, Fu started to change his mind because he knew a peaceful deal could save thousands of people as well as precious ancient architecture.

On January 31, 1949, after members of the CPC negotiated with Fu Zuoyi three times, Beijing was finally liberated in a non-violent way.

Mao Zedong thought highly of Fu for his decision. He said that Fu Zuoyi contributed much to the liberation of Beijing. His decision and contribution will always be remembered.
